Sins Eight Miles Down

Note: This is an adaption of an article on Beyeperfect.org.

Mormonism teaches that Jesus becomes our creditor, and we must pay back to him the debt of sin he paid for us. By emphasizing that God not only forgives our sins but forgets them, the Bible shows how false this teaching of Mormonism is.

One passage that dramatically teaches that God forgets our sins is Micah 7:19, “You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

After reading the passage, focus on the last phrase, “depths of the sea.” Scientists say the deepest part of the ocean is over 39,000 feet down, which is about eight miles down. That’s a long way down.

Imagine trying to find something in the depths of the sea. We all have seen movies or heard stories of the difficulty of finding survivors of shipwrecks floating on the surface. That’s difficult enough. But trying to find something underwater – finding something lying in the depths – deserves the title “Mission Impossible.”

Although God could easily find sins eight miles down, he uses this imagery to support the biblical truth that sins forgiven by him are sins forgotten by him. Our debt no longer exists. He doesn’t demand repayment.

After making this point with the missionaries, you could continue by proclaiming the great joy this passage gives you. Talk about a heavy weight being lifted off – never to be put on again! What a comfort to picture the vast oceans – to think about eight miles of water covering your sins.
